Alice has always had a compulsion towards functional paraphernalia. She aspires to commemorate the hidden connecting components and tools that we associate with clothes making. Alice’s jewellery combines forged and gilded precious metals coupled with semi precious stones and textiles to assist her need to personify the wistful artefacts of her admiration.
Keeping with a rather lingerie theme, Alice O’Neill from Bucks New University has created a range based on the 50s sewing box and the hidden elements of dressmaking. Gold-plated silver brooches appear as washing instruction symbols, while the same metal is used for a necklace based on a darning card frame; here wound around with fine flesh pink cotton thread. A tiny embroidery hoop inset with old lace becomes a chatelaine pendant.
Currently exhibiting on stand J5 at New Designers at the Design centre in Islington
